He graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School with the class of 1965 and went on to study biology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where he earned his bachelors degree. On August 20, 1949, he married Kathleen Katie Mistlebauer at St. Joseph Church in Sturgeon Bay.
