In today’s episode of “Healing From Within” host Sheryl Glick welcomes Richard Moss MD author of Inside Out Healing which offers an intense study for understanding human consciousness and behavior. Richard Moss was a practicing physician when he experienced a spontaneous state of illumination and with this opening came a new level of sensibility including a heightened intuition, subtle insight into mystical and spiritual teachings, and the ability to sense human body-energy fields. Impelled by the intensity of the experience, he resolved to find enough time for self-evaluation, making it necessary to take an extended sabbatical leave from his medical practice. Meditating for hours each day and reading spiritual and psychoanalytic literature, poetry and mythology, he began a process of deep introspection. Above all, he made a careful observation of the new quality of energy moving in his body and how his thoughts instantly generated emotions and sensations. From this reflective period, Dr. Moss determined that the root cause of most unnecessary human suffering and conflict comes from two basic forms of ignorance: unquestioned identification with thinking, especially our judgments and beliefs, and secondly, the general inability in most people to engage threatening feeling in an aware, vulnerable and creative way. In recognizing the presence of the inner teacher, soul essence or being of our lives, Moss realized that he was being guided through this new and uncharted part of himself by his dreams, and began his study and contemplation of dreams, which are central in his teaching, and for his immense respect for the wisdom that dwells in each of us.
Sheryl Glick, as an intuitive energy practitioner and through her Reiki training, yoga practice, and extensive studies of many energy modalities, has had a similar awakening and transformation and believes that each human being is born with a complete sense or knowingness of their destiny or life path. If respected and honored by their parents and teachers to express their individual wisdom and needs, children would develop as healthier and more productive self-fulfilling adults. It is in the expression and development of this inner teacher, that we are able to manifest, create and live in a state of peace, well-being, and harmony with all living things.
A few details of Richard Moss’s extensive, professional credentials include…he attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook and he earned his M.D. from New York Medical College. He is a diplomat of the American College of Emergency Medicine and the American College of Preventive Medicine and a member of the American Holistic Medical Association. Moss has presented at numerous conferences, churches, training organizations, businesses such as Eli Lilly, and institutions such as Harvard University, University of Chicago, Stanford University, U.C. Berkeley, and others in North America, Europe, South America, and Australia.
For the past 37 years, Dr. Moss, a globally renowned physician-turned-master healer and workshop leader, has been guiding people on profound journeys of self discovery and is known by the spiritual community as the Maestro of Deep Work, a program that guides people to delve deeply into their inner core so they can achieve a life of “Radical Aliveness,” Unconditional Love and Real Inner Peace to lead them into harmony within themselves, in their relationships and with the world.
Richard Moss teaches a path of transformation and conscious living that is accessible to everyone and his work is about empowering one to live fully and creatively which is the divine right of every human being. It is what he calls an invitation to “radical aliveness”—a vitality and intelligence that comes from our deepest being. In all of his programs his goal is to empower each participant to learn to become their own teacher and experience multi-dimensional consciousness in the effort to achieve true change and a real lasting transformation only possible by doing “DEEP WORK”. DEEP WORK is centered in achieving present moment awareness and to clear away the beliefs, habits and thinking patterns that prevent them from living in a joyful and loving state nearly all of the time.
The 5 Elements of Deep Work include:
- Understanding where and when to begin. The “where” is in your body, and the “when” is always right now. Who you are begins Now! Not in the past, when there may have been neglect or some trauma, not when your relationships broke up, not when you got sick, not even in a remembered bliss that you believe was the pinnacle of your life. In this work there is only the Now-moment and how you are present with whatever is happening within you and around you.
- Transformation requires learning to live more consistently in the NOW. This means learning to observe your beliefs but not be identified with them and to be fully present with threatening feelings without collapsing into old defensive patterns. To accomplish this a mixture of meditative movement, breathing and body-awareness practices are suggested. Becoming aware of the stories you create about yourself can help you establish a more focused and realistic plan of goals and wishes to be manifested through proper action and thought.
- Differentiating Feelings from Emotions. Sheryl loved how Richard simply clarified the two which are often thought to be one and the same, but are clearly not…Feelings are intelligent, like belonging or aloneness offering information about your state of being in the present moment…..Emotions are not intelligent and are sensations like anger or jealousy that are aroused by your stories or beliefs that you have incorporated into your identity. Emotions quickly disappear as soon as you bring your attention to the NOW and thinking stops.
- You Do Not Need To Fix Yourself. You need to invent yourself in new ways. In Deep Work the emphasis is the fundamental creativity with which you are present with your thoughts and feelings. There is a special state you need to reach, not some desired outcome to be attained. All you can do is learn to dance with every element of your experience.
- Effort and Grace: Disengaging from the painful arousal created by your stories and choosing to face threatening feelings each time in new ways is the effort you can make. Transformation is never fully in your hands, but when our efforts are sincere we can be unified far beyond what we may have expected.
In Richard Moss’s book “The Second Miracle” spiritual maturity is discussed. Sheryl suggests that Spiritual Maturity may be the prime reason for a physical life, and as souls mature we are better prepared for greater levels of intimacy, empathy, compassion and love beyond the ego needs. To reach levels of spiritual maturity, guidance is given to healing early childhood traumas, deepening the incarnation of spirit, meeting the ego’s original perception which is the fear of loss of Self. Spiritual Maturity is a great reward in and of itself and also as the outcome of “Deep Work” in self investigating our motives for our actions, fears and any perceived limitation to our soul and physical life choices.
Richard quotes in “Inside Out Healing”….”Many people are divided within themselves and this split is an ongoing problem. You also say you have found that the 2 fundamental challenges to self-healing and awakening are….identification with over thinking, and the emotional suffering it causes, and secondly, the old unconscious habit of running away from every threatening feeling even from the truly expansive and positive ones. Conquering this challenge is the journey to inner freedom where we allow ourselves to feel all feelings such as melancholy, helplessness, powerlessness, and emptiness that your ego turned into emotions such as anger or shame. Sometimes they may be feelings of joy and love that your ego has turned down and caused you to become withdrawn and distrusting: so therefore, genuine health is a matter of allowing yourself to be restored to the full intelligence of feeling both high and low…allowing, accepting and surrendering to all influences without the influence of ego.”
In summarizing this episode of “Healing From Within”, Sheryl reads a quote from Dr. Moss “I have lived long enough to know without a doubt that the greatest and most fulfilling adventure in life is that of becoming more conscious and building living relationships. The only truly essential requirement is willingness. Are you willing to change yourself? Whether you’re motivated by illness, unhappiness or the quest to taste life as completely as you can, the keys to success are within you…Connection to your true state is a state of being that is contagious. An awake, loving person creates a field of consciousness in which other people feel safe and become more loving. A frightened or angry person also creates a field but it’s one that engenders fear and division. The simple truth is that few of us have any idea how well we can feel and how healthy we can be if we start to unify ourselves from within learning to live more in the NOW.”
