INT. HOSPICE ROOM – NIGHT FADE IN
Darkness.
A HEART MONITOR emits a slow, rhythmic beep.
BEEP.
BEEP.
BEEP.
Moonlight spills through partially opened blinds, casting pale silver lines across the room.
An ELDERLY WOMAN, late nineties, lies motionless beneath a white blanket. Her breathing is shallow and uneven. Every inhale seems like it might be her last.
Beside her bed stands IRIS BENNETT (40s), a hospice nurse whose kindness shows in her eyes. She gently checks the woman's pulse and glances at the monitor.
A few feet away stands DR. ADRIAN VALE (48).
Still.
Silent.
His white coat is immaculate.
His expression is not.
It isn't cruel.
It isn't compassionate.
It is simply absent.
The expression of a man who has watched death too many times.
Iris lowers her voice.
IRIS
Her daughter said she'd be here by midnight.
Adrian checks his watch.
ADRIAN
She won't make it.
Iris looks at him.
Not offended.
Just disappointed.
The old woman stirs.
A weak breath escapes her lips.
Her eyes flutter open.
For a moment she seems confused.
Then suddenly-
Her face brightens.
A smile spreads across her features.
Not a polite smile.
Not relief.
Recognition.
She is looking at someone.
Someone standing near the foot of the bed.
Iris turns.
There is nobody there.
The old woman's eyes begin to fill with tears.
OLD WOMAN
You came.
Iris glances around the room.
Adrian does not.
The old woman's gaze never leaves the empty space.
A peaceful calm settles over her.
The kind of peace that doesn't belong in a hospital room.
OLD WOMAN
I knew you would.
A final breath.
Then stillness.
The monitor emits a continuous tone.
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.
Iris bows her head.
Adrian steps forward immediately.
Professional.
Efficient.
He checks her pulse.
Her eyes.
Her pupils.
Routine.
Nothing more.
ADRIAN
Time of death...
(checks watch)
10:42 PM.
Iris watches him.
Waiting for some sign of humanity.
Any sign.
There is none.
Adrian reaches over and switches off the monitor.
Silence.
The room suddenly feels larger.
Emptier.
The old woman's smile remains.
Adrian notices it.
Only for a second.
Then turns away.
He walks toward the door.
As Adrian exits the room, Iris watches him go.
Not judgment.
Not frustration.
Concern.
The kind reserved for someone who has been hurting for far too long.
Adrian disappears into the hallway.
Iris looks back at the old woman.
The peaceful smile still remains.
